EMDR therapy and anxiety treatment go hand-in-hand because EMDR helps reprocess distressing thoughts that often trigger anxious responses. By targeting the root causes of anxiety, such as trauma, fear-based memories, or negative core beliefs, EMDR allows the brain to form healthier associations and reduce overactivation of the nervous system.
While EMDR is widely known for trauma recovery, it’s also highly effective for treating general anxiety, social anxiety, phobias, and performance anxiety. It helps clients identify and reprocess anxiety-provoking experiences, even those that may not seem like “trauma” in the traditional sense.
During EMDR therapy for anxiety, you’ll focus on specific thoughts or situations that trigger your anxiety while engaging in bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements). Over time, the emotional intensity of those triggers reduces, allowing you to feel more grounded, in control, and capable of experiencing more positive responses to former triggers.
The number of sessions varies depending on your history and goals, but many clients begin to notice improvements within 6–12 sessions. For more complex anxiety linked to unresolved trauma, a longer course of therapy may be recommended.
Yes, EMDR is a clinically supported, non-invasive therapy that has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety, PTSD, and panic. It is safe when delivered by a trained EMDR therapist, and the pace of treatment is always tailored to the individual’s readiness and comfort.
